My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

My Sister, the Serial Killer

When Korede’s dinner is interrupted one night by a distress call from her sister, Ayoola, she knows what’s expected of her: bleach, rubber gloves, nerves of steel and a strong stomach. This’ll be the third boyfriend Ayoola’s dispatched in, quote, self-defence and the third mess that her lethal little sibling has left Korede to clear away. She should probably go to the police for the good of the menfolk of Nigeria, but she loves her sister and, as they say, family always comes first.

Until, that is, Ayoola starts dating the doctor where Korede works as a nurse. Korede’s long been in love with him, and isn’t prepared to see him wind up with a knife in his back: but to save one would mean sacrificing the other…

I wanted to love this one, but it fell a bit flat for me. This is easily a novel that you can read in a sitting. It starts off with Korede getting a phone call from her sister, Ayoola, who has killed yet another boyfriend. This one makes it three, which makes Ayoola a serial killer.

I liked the premise of the novel, a sister as a serial killer, but sadly the characters didn’t win me over. I didn’t really like Korede, I found her to be a bit of a pushover, who never stood up for herself. Then there was Ayoola. I really disliked her. She was selfish, spoiled and didn’t care about how her actions impacted her loved ones, especially her sister.

3 calculators out of a potential 5. A quick read that I enjoyed, but I wished I had more of a connection with the characters.

My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing

My Lovely Wife

Our love story is simple. I met a gorgeous woman. We fell in love. We had kids. We moved to the suburbs. We told each other our biggest dreams, and our darkest secrets. And then we got bored.

We look like a normal couple. We’re your neighbors, the parents of your kid’s friend, the acquaintances you keep meaning to get dinner with.

We all have secrets to keeping a marriage alive.

Ours just happens to be getting away with murder.

I’ve been seeing My Lovely Wife everywhere and the reviews have been raving about this debut novel. I’m so happy to be caught up in the hype, because this novel is amazing!

The less you know about the novel going in, the better. You only get narrative from the husband, and oh boy what he and his wife do is totally unbelievable. You feel like you are on this adventure with them and it’s a crazy ride!

I can see My Lovely Wife not being for everyone. You don’t love the main characters because of the things that they have gone, but somehow you kind of cheer for them and want them to success in not getting caught.

Three Days Missing

It’s every parent’s worst nightmare: the call that comes in the middle of the night.

When Kat Jenkins awakens to the police on her doorstep, her greatest fear is realized. Her nine-year-old son, Ethan, is missing—vanished from the cabin where he’d been on an overnight field trip with his class. Shocked and distraught, Kat rushes to the campground where he was last seen. But she’s too late; the authorities have returned from their search empty-handed after losing Ethan’s trail in the mountain forest.

Another mother from the school, Stef Huntington, seems like she has it all: money, prominence in the community, a popular son and a loving husband. She hardly knows Kat, except for the vicious gossip that swirls around Kat’s traumatic past. But as the police investigation unfolds, Ethan’s disappearance will have earth-shattering consequences in Stef’s own life—and the paths of these two mothers are about to cross in ways no one could have anticipated.

Racing against the clock, their desperate search for answers begins—one where the greatest danger could lie behind the everyday smiles of those they trust the most.

The Other Woman by Sandie Jones

The Other Woman

Emily thinks Adam’s perfect; the man she thought she’d never meet. But lurking in the shadows is a rival; a woman who shares a deep bond with the man she loves.

Emily chose Adam, but she didn’t choose his mother Pammie. There’s nothing a mother wouldn’t do for her son, and now Emily is about to find out just how far Pammie will go to get what she wants: Emily gone forever.

The Other Woman is an addictive, fast-paced psychological thriller about the destructive relationship between Emily, her boyfriend Adam, and his manipulative mother Pammie.

I’m behind on my love for The Other Woman. I believe this was one of the hits of summer/fall 2018. I remember seeing the cover everywhere and the rave reviews, but I never was interested in it. Then for whatever reason I gave it and I decided to add it to my to-reads. I’m so glad that I did since this was one of my favourite mysterious so far this year!

The less you need to know going in the better. All you need to know is girlfriend, boyfriend and his mother. It sounds like you may of heard this story before (or maybe have lived it), but it’s unlike anything I have read before. Doesn’t it sound intriguing?

I binged read on my train ride to and from work and then finished the last 40ish pages before bed. I just couldn’t put it down. I felt like I had a connection with the main character, Emily. After her last heartbreak, she has been torn on love until she meets Adam. Obviously he is awesome, but the problem is his mother, Pammie. The interactions between Emily and Pammie were just so awful that you just felt so bad for Emily. You try your best to please someone, but time and time again they just knock you down.

The only reason why I’m not giving this a perfect 5 is because of the relationship between Emily and Adam. I know that they are suppose to be an amazing couple who love each other, but I just never saw it. Their relationship never felt authentic to me, so it was hard to believe that Emily would put up with Pammie for Adam.
